K 1 – Vineyards Route

Relacija

Moravske Toplice–Bukovnica–M. Toplice – 44 km

The route begins in Moravske Toplice, from which it leads towards Te±anovici and Bogojina. Just after the bridge before the village turn left off the main road towards the village and Plečnik's famous church.

Then return to the main road towards Filovci, where you will find the Filovci potters, and in the settlement of Gaj you can visit a beautifully preserved vineyard cottage where you can taste the local wine. Continuing through the forest, a gentle climb and then a quick descent will bring you to the village of Bukovnica.

Nearby is Lake Bukovnica with its renowned energy points. The route continues towards Motvarjevci and then through Porda±inci to Prosenjakovci. Here you can choose the shorter route among the vineyards and orchards through Selo and Vučja Gomila and then back to Moravske Toplice, or the longer route through Berkovci, Ivanj±evci, Ratkovci, Kančevci, Ivanovci, Sebeborci and Martjanci before returning to Moravske Toplice.

Both routes take you to slightly higher ground and then back to the plain, and there are many interesting sights to see: in Selo there is a Romanesque rotunda, and there are the remains of burial mounds along the route. In Berkovci you can see Časar’s mill, the starting point for the Sweet Trail, which leads first to Ivanj±evci, where you will be welcomed by Kozic the beekeeper who will show you his beehives and beeswax products and offer you a taste of mead. In Ratkovci you can try the honey cakes at Joµica Celec’s honey shop.

From there the route leads through Kančevci (past the Spiritual Center and the excellent lookout point at the Church of St. Benedict) to Ivanovci, where the Sweet Trail ends at the Goričko Vineyard Center and the Ratnik inn. The cycling route then leads through Sebeborci and Martjanci (well-known church and frescoes) and back to Moravske Toplice. This route offers excellent opportunities for getting to know southeastern Goričko, where the hills meet the plain, and members of the Hungarian national minority live along the Hungarian border.

This area is a true meeting point of various faiths – Calvinists in Motvarjevci, Baptists in Fokovci and Evangelists and Catholics. The shorter route leads among the vineyards close to Moravske Toplice, where you can try the local specialties and wine at wineries, wine cellars and tourism farms. Or if you like, you can take the longer route through Kančevci.
