Despite regulatory measures, the Velika Krka (Big Krka) and its tributaries from its source to Calovci have remained for the most part fairly untouched, and its banks are covered all along with abundant growth, which in some places spreads onto agricultural lands.

The morphologically richly structured stream has several pools which serve as hunting grounds for the otter Lutra lutra, and the stream is also the habitat of the Ukrainian river lamprey Eudontomyzon mariae.
