Butterflies and Biodiversity
Butterflies of the genus Maculinea are highly endangered in Europe. They are living in some parts of Goričko on wet and unfertilised meadows with Sanguisorba officinalis plant. Females of Maculinea butterflies lay their eggs only in the blossoms of this plant. The larvae feed for a short time on this specific foodplant and then falling down to ground. In this time Myrmica ants bring it to its nest where they spent most of their life preying on ant broods.
