International Hand-mowing Competition in Nature Park Goričko in 2011

The Singing association from Selo and the Public institution Nature Park Goričko organized an International hand-mowing competition in Selo on 22^nd May 2011. Spectators from Pomurje area, other parts of Slovenia, Hungary and a fan group from Croatia took advantage of good weather and came to see 51 skilful mowers from five countries. Among hand-scythe mowers from Slovenia, Hungary and Serbia which already participated in 2010, mowers from Bosnia &Herzegovina and Croatia joined the competition in this year.

Competition consisted in three categories; men up to 60 years, women with no age limit and veteran men and women. All competitors had to mow fields 7 m by 7 m in size. Competitors had been placed based on their total score in the competition, which was calculated as a composite of the points earned by mowing time and the quality of the mowed field by three judges.

For the first time ever in Selo spectators could enjoy the Relay competitions for Men consist of four team members and competition with BCS sickle bar mowers.

In men’s category Mirko Kecman from Bosnia & Herzegovina has won the competition, Marija Puhan from Slovenia (Nature Park Goričko) in women`s category, while Joľe Škrabec (Nature Park Ljubljansko barje) has won in veteran men and women category. Men from Bosnia & Herzegovina were quickest and won the first team relay competition in Selo ahead of team from Slovenia.

During the competition the project “Landscape in harmony” and nature friendly mowing technique were presented on a stand by Gregor and Stanka. Spectators had also opportunity to try and buy several types of dairy products such as soft and semi-hard cheeses from sheep and cow milk produced by Gorički raj Company from Ratkovci, handcrafted wooden products made by Štefan Rupanek from Šalovci and other traditional crafts from Goričko.
